Faculty Position in Theoretical Optical Physics

The Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in theoretical optical physics to begin in Fall 2006. We seek candidates who will establish a vigorous, externally funded research program and will collaborate with the experimental research groups within the Department. The appointment is expected to broaden and complement existing research programs in quantum optics, nonlinear optical properties of materials, and condensed matter physics. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the newly overlapping areas of quantum optics and condensed matter. Additional collaborative research opportunities exist through the interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Studies in Photonics Research (http://www.umbc.edu/caspr). In exceptional cases, the appointment may be made at a higher rank. A Ph.D. in Physics or in a closely related field and the ability to effectively teach across the undergraduate and graduate physics curriculum are required. Postdoctoral experience is desirable and start-up funds are available. The department currently consists of 19 tenure-track faculty, 25 research faculty, 45 graduate students and approximately 80 majors. The department offers a BS in Physics, and both MS and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics and in Atmospheric Physics. Research expenditures currently exceed $6M per year. (For more information see: http://physics.umbc.edu).

Please submit an application letter, a resume, research and teaching plans and the names and addresses of at least three references to
