The Dome on the Roof

The dome on the roof of the Physics Dept houses a 6.5m focal length Cassegrain telescope, incorporating a 0.81m diameter (f/8) mirror. The telescope is used for both instructional and research work, and is operated by members of the Joint Center for Astrophysics in collaboration with JCET.

The telescope is open to the public on the first thursday of next month (weather permitting).

In 2004 the research capabilities were upgraded by the purchase of over $20,000 in new equipment:  a wide-field imager, 20 narrow-band filters, and a spectrograph. The image below shows the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 obtained using the wide-field imager. NGC 6946 as seen with wide-field camera
